Iceland is full of ridiculously attractive human beings. Seriously, every single one of ’em is a mega babe. Both men and women are tall, slender, and have beautiful long blonde hair. The Viking-esque guys also have these gorgeous beards and their hair is smoothed back with coconut oil. I couldn’t even make this up if I tried! The people of Iceland are also friendly, open-minded, fairly progressive, laid back and speak impeccable English. It just seems unfair to have an entire island populated with such beautiful people inside and out. And don’t get me started on the majestic geological wonders of the island.

What’s even more jealous invoking, is that the people of Iceland are excellent musicians and put on rockin’ music fests, especially for such a small country. It must be an island that starts with an “I” thing. Similarly to Ireland, the fierce alcohol drenched night-life and cold weather ushers people indoors, resulting in superb musical creations. The only reason being surrounded by tall, beautiful, musically inclined people in Iceland doesn’t bode well, is if you’re a shorty like myself (in comparison, of course) attending a music festival. Other than that, I don’t think anyone could possibly come up with a single complaint regarding the island of fire and ice and its perfect people.

I was in Iceland for almost a week, basking in all its glory, soaking in geothermal pools, hiking on glaciers, gawking at volcanoes and black sandy beaches, and standing in pure amazement at the endless number of massive waterfalls complete with giant rainbows. By night, I attended the Sónar Music Festival in Reykjavík, held in Harpa, the architectural wonder/concert hall by the shore. Sónar was a three-night music fest featuring a plethora of Icelandic and/or Nordic producers, DJs, bands and more. It wasn’t a music festival I’d typically attend, nor music I usually listen to, however, locals were out in full force, and who can deny a sweaty dance party? Yes, Diplo and Major Lazer were also there, but I’m not even gonna get into that. One Icelandic guy did turn to me and say, “Fuck Diplo, I don’t listen to that mainstream shit!” He also compared Major Lazer’s music to that of a “Donkey boner in your face.”

I missed a lot of bands ‘cus I was busy doing things like looking into the sky for a glimpse of the Northern Lights. I also kicked myself for missing When Saints Go Machine, but it was still a fabulous festival full new music discoveries. Here are my highlights:

Berndsen was my favorite dance inducing performance from a local at the fest. David Berndsen, the iconic, bearded synth-pop figure and frontman of the Icelandic group had plastered his face with blue stars and danced up and down the stage, occasionally jumping into selfies taken by fans near the stage. He was accompanied by two swaying twin-like long-haired synth masters including Hermigervill, one of Iceland’s “most notable producers” and an unimpressed bass player – A hilarious site to sweat up a storm to. Berndsen has released two albums, “Lover in the Dark” and “Planet Earth,” which he produced in collaboration with Hermigervill.

To put it frankly, (Anders) Trentemøller is a badass, and so is each member of his band. The man isn’t Icelandic, but damn, the Danish producer’s got major presence. His show was dark, powerful and entrancing, though it certainly wasn’t over the top. He didn’t need gimmicks or dancers, or a giant clear ball to roll around in (ahem, Diplo) to captivate his audience. Trentemøller’s been in the music scene since the 90s, then emerged as an electro producer in 2006 with his debut album. He’s since expanded his band to about 7 people, has extensively toured the world playing all major music festivals including his own sold out tour. His 2013 album release, Lost is a whirlwind of musical influences, as well as large collaborative effort featuring Jonny Pierce from The Drums, Kazu Makino of Blonde Redhead, Jana Hunter of Lower Dens, and Sune Wagner of The RaveonettesTrentemøller continues to pleasantly surprise fans and audiences with his ever-changing and evolving music. As Vice stated, “Much like its predecessor, ‘Lost’ serves not only as a logical continuation of his work, but also as yet another fuck-you to whatever genre you thought you had him boxed into.“

Hjaltalín is a large 7 piece and beloved Reykjavik-based group with a genre of music that no one can quite pinpoint. They formed in 2004 as part of a high school song writing competition, and today they’ve won multiple, “Best Album of the Year” awards and recently scored the silent film “Days of Gray,” which premiered at the Reykjavík International Film Festival (they also won album of the year for this soundtrack!). The group was unlike any of the other artists we had the pleasure to see. They were slow, intense, emotionally driven and magnetic. They clearly had a dedicated fan following who were front and center fixated on Högni Egilsson’s long flowing blond locks, entranced by Sigríður Thorlacius’s powerful voice and taken in and away by the beautiful violin music. They released their third album, Enter 4 in December of 2012, which of course, won Album of the Year by The Reykjavík Grapevine: “Not only have they made the best Icelandic album of 2012 by a country mile, they’ve gone and  created a record that’s probably one of the most searingly bleak and honest record from an Icelandic group in what feels like…forever?”

Hjaltalín – Myself

ELOQ isn’t Icelandic, but we’ll give him a break ‘cus his sounds and visuals were simply addictive. ELOQ aka August Fenger Janson is a young “Danish wunderkind” who apparently already has gold AND platinum records in Denmark. He played to a giant crowd, was extremely grateful to be there, and was easily my favorite of the larger scale producers on the main stage due to his hypnotic “joytrap” jams.

FM Belfast is a catchy electro-pop Icelandic band known for their quirky performances and colorful antics. They vary from 3-8 members. At Sonar, there were about 6 of them, two I’m honestly not sure what they did aside dance, but everyone loved it anyway. They were extremely charismatic and energetic and their cult following got up and down as often as possible. Their soon-to-be-released third album, Brighter Days is due out April 22nd via Record Records.

Tanya & Marlon are eclectic, ambient Icelandic cousins and BFFs with an affinity for blue hair, bunny masks and heart hand symbols. They were playing in a room with stadium seating, which is hard when trying to get a crowd rowdy, but after their first few beats, people began to pile onto the stage and dance around them, which they gladly welcomed. They released their first album in Iceland via Möller Records.

Hype-Worthy! Listen to New Brooklyn Band’s Self-Titled EP: Wet

WetWet is a new up-and-coming Brooklyn-based trio creating some steady hubbub in the music blogosphere. They’re producing ridiculously catchy, beautiful and refreshing pop songs (with heavy themes) at a consistent rate. Today, their self-titled EP is officially out (stream below), which has been a bright and sparkling joy in my listening life as of late.

The band just joined Neon Gold Records (Ellie Goulding, Haim, HAERTS, , etc.) and any fans of say, MS MR, Ellie Goulding, Haim, and maybe even Purity Ring will get a definite kick outta Wet.

If you’re gallivanting through the madness at CMJ Music Marathon in NYC this week, Wet is playing tonight (10/15) at the Bowery Ballroom, The Fader Fort at Converse Rubber Tracks, as well as the Santos Party House for Neon Gold’s Showcase (with HEARTS) on Thursday, 10/17, and Baby’s All Right on Friday, 10/18.

New Video: MØ – Never Wanna Know

MØ - Never Wanna know baby has a new video for us y’all. The up-and-coming Copenhagen-hailing electro-pop princess also known as Karen Marie Ørsted has released a new video for her single “Never Wanna Know.” It’s made in typical  fashionBlack and white with a hodgepodge of old random clips, and her seemingly dancing around in her room somberly. The new pop song has a sad Lana Del Rey-esque beach vibe to it, and it’s dig-worthy. Not sure if this entirely makes up for her cancelled San Francisco show yesterday, but it helps.

That’s a Wrap! 8 Phenomenal Highlights from SXSW 2013 Music Fest

SXSW No Breakfast TacosToday, I don’t have any plans to stay up until 4 am, drink cheap booze, eat copious amounts of meat or breakfast tacos and race around Austin, TX to watch 2,000+ bands play on a bridge, some steps, in a bar, church, garage, house, backyard, or in a burger joint… it’s weird. SXSW is officially over.

Although the mayhem of a music festival is utterly exhausting, it’s also rejuvenating in the sense that you fully submerge yourself into the deep end of a music-worshiping pool. At SXSW, you’re surrounded by thousands of bloggers, musicians, music industry folk, podcasters, writers, celebrities, and most importantly, but simply, fans. During these 6 whirlwind days, you’re immersed amongst a concentration of people who all share the same love and appreciation for music as equally as you do. It’s refreshing.

The festival exposes you to so many surreal opportunities, chances, music discoveries, and connections that you’d most likely never experience otherwise – It’s a truly magical experience. With that, here are 8 phenomenal highlights from SXSW 2013:

Helsinki’s goth LCD Soundsystem trio, K-X-P was absolutely electrifying and their performance was by far my favorite of the SXSW experience. Donning goth gear in the form of black capes and studded leather dresses, K-X-P pulsed long, intensely dark synth and heavy beats throughout the bar at 1 am. I also spotted Bob Boilen from NPR’s All Songs Considered in the room and introduced myself, as I’m a big fan. Quite extraordinarily, Bob mentioned me in his podcast that night, and coco stereo in his SXSW wrap up – Truly an honor!  You simply never know who may rock out next to at SXSW!

K-X-P – Melody

12 pm is early by SXSW standards, but it was Empress Ofs first appearance on the festival circuit and it was well worth the price of a little lost sleep. Empress Of is not only adorable, but possesses a magnetic voice and purges raw, refreshing talent that made her performance appear seamless. Her voice quavered when introducing herself, but she happily bounced along to new electro-pop gems we were all eager to hear, as she currently only dons three. Humble, yet extremely talented, Empress Of stole the hearts and ears of many.

M for Montreal /Arbutus Records Showcase at the Swan Dive
I could write a novel’s worth of blog posts purely about this showcase as I never left, and it was 7 hours long! The lineup included Mac DeMarco, Sean Nicholas Savage, Majical Cloudz, Pat Jordache, Blue Hawaii, Doldrums, and Braids. If it wasn’t already obvious that Montreal is kicking serious ass in the music realm, it should be now.

Though Mac DeMarco, everyone’s favorite goofy crooner/rocker isn’t an Arbutus Records artist, he is from Montreal and a dear friend to these musicians. This was the 3rd time I’d seen DeMarco (who was still wearing the same garbs) at SXSW, and not purposefully, he just seemed to be everywhere. However, this was by far his best performance, as he seemed to be in true bizarro form amongst friends. At one point mid-performance, DeMarco scrambled up a wooden beam and began swinging from the ceiling rafters which throughly pissed off venue owners, yet pleased the crowd to no end.

The intriguing, ever-ecclectic and highly talented singer/songwriter Sean Nicholas Savage got on stage with just a keyboard and a microphone. He took his shoes off, swayed his hips, sang his best hits and the audience melted, or maybe that was just me.

Blue Hawaii‘s performance was by for the most surprising and mind-blowing for many. The duo filled the white washed venue with pulsing synth and Raphaelle Standell-Preston’s sweet, melodic, falsetto voice strikingly resembled Grimes. The crowd danced hard, especially Devon of Majical Cloudz who was front and center.

Blue Hawaii – In Two 

With a drummer and two keyboard/synth backups, Doldrums ferociously played his hypnotic, experimental electro beats (out of a suitcase), belted lyrics while crowd surfing with ease, and placed a dance inducing spell over the entire audience. Never had I seen such a massive conglomerate of pulsating, jumping and gyrating humans at SXSW. Everyone in the audience completely lost themselves in the music and it was incredible to witness/experience. The energy was at an all-time high.

Doldrums – Egypt

The most endearing aspect of the showcase, however, was witnessing the camaraderie, support and love each of the Arbutus and/or other Canadian artists showed for each other. I also spotted DeMarco obviously, as well as Born Gold and Mozart’s Sister amongst others. The entire venue was filled to the brim with artists who watched, cheered and danced harder than most to their fellow musicians’ music.

I had the guilty pleasure of proving multiple people wrong at the Pitchfork Day Party, by exclaiming “Rhye‘s a guy y’all!” when many were smacked with the realization that Rhye is indeed a man. I mean, his name is Mike Milosh and he owns that dreamy, silky, seductive and sultry voice. Rhye explained that he and his band, including a phenomenal violinist and trombone player, had just flew in from Berlin and were on their 40th hour of being awake. Yet, they still played an astonishing set of what Milosh referred to as sexy “night time music” during broad day light.

Rhye – Open

Girls Names at the Flamingo Cantina
Though their faces were quite complacent, Girls Names rocked long and hard, and not an eye could pry away from their quint essential post-punk Brit rock, (they are from Belfast, after all). There wasn’t anything out of the ordinary, crazy, or gasp-worthy necessary to make this a successful set, Girls Names simply provided steady, hefty, refreshing rock n’ roll.

I was completely unaware of this ambient Icelandic group/producer until my good ol pal, Bob Boilen had suggested the show. The bar, rightfully named Peckerheads, was clamoring with noise from happy drunkards and thumping beats from below, but Ólafur Arnalds urged people to take a seat and enjoy the beauty he was about to embark upon us. Accompanied by an intense violinist and cello player, Ólafur’s soothing, melodic and beautiful instrumental music quieted the crowd and made people exclaim, “wow.”

I somehow managed to start day 1 of SXSW, typically the tamest of all, in the most blissful way. A crowd of people piled onto the Exploded Drawing double-decker party boat and we floated down the river into the sunset, all while sipping on cucumber/kale margaritas and dancing to the seriously sweet beats of 10+ DJs. Giraffagethe moniker of San Francisco-hailing producer, Charlie Yin, had the quickest, and most nimble fingers of them all, and he induced everyone to jump up, and all the ladies to get down.

Granted, this was technically a Chaos in Tejas event put on by BrooklynVegan, but racing to watch indie punk rockers Parquet CourtsMerchandise and Destruction Unit rock hard on a bridge at 3 am seemed so utterly SXSW. The bridge was literally rockin’ while the crowd was rollin’ into each other during a frenzy of excited mosh pits that lasted well into early morning.

In the effort to make this wrap up reasonably succinct, out of the 50+ bands I managed to see, other stand out performances included: Baths, DIANA, Autre Ne Veut, Mozart’s Sister, CHVRCHES, Austra, Ryan Hemsworth, and . And while everyone in attendance may be missing SXSW already, it’s never too early to plan for next year. Until next time, adios Tejas!

Must-See Acts at SXSW 2013

must-see bands at sxsw 2013The anticipation and chaos for this year’s SXSW music fest in Austin, Texas (March 12th-17th) continues to grow at great lengths. The amount of parties, new bands added, RSVPs, lineups and showcases consistently flow in at alarming rates; and it certainly isn’t over yet. The increasing excitement is contagious and overwhelming, especially when you envision just how much amazing music (and people; 60K to be exact) will embark upon the Tejas capital, and all at once.

To contribute to the ever-growing hype, here is a compilation of (40+) absolute must-see acts/bands at this year’s SXSW. Granted, no one’s ever gonna see ’em all (one can only hope!), so these top 6 absolute must-sees are ones you should seriously kick yourself if missed:

NEW Hype-Worthy Roundup: James Blake + G3NESIS + CHVRCHES + Lorde + Azekel + iamforest + Coma

Yeeehaaw! It’s officially official: coco stereo‘s goin’ to SXSW! In a series of amazing (and in some cases, extremely lucky) events, everything seemed to come together oh so perfectly and I will be in Austin, Texas for the Interactive + Film and Music festivals. So now that universe has aligned in my favor, I present to you a plethora of new jams from hype-worthy bands:

James Blake, the 24-year-old London-based, “post-dubstep” electro producer has been blowing the blogosphere away this week with his return. Blake recently released an amazingly smooth, crooning, falsetto-hinged and emotionally driven new track, “Retrograde,” which debuted on  BBC Radio 1. His sophomore album, Overgrown, is due out April 8th. G3NESIS is a brand spankin’ new and thoroughly addicting female rap/hip-hop group consisting of Kelin Kaardal and Genesis Mohanraj (formerly of Juice). The Vancouver-based duo don just a handful of tracks, “Yes Daddy” being their newest and strongest of the lot, and I’m already eager to hear more.

G3NESIS – Yes Daddy

It’s no secret that people have gone ape-shit crazy for the UK hailing electro-pop trio, CHVRCHESsince their conception merely 6 months ago. The group only dons (now) three songs, their latest track, “Recover” found below, yet their fairytale story of Indie stardom is still going strong and they’re headed to the US. They’ll also be playing with  in LA at The Echo, for a spectacular combination of electro-pop hype-mania. Be sure to look for them at SXSW and listen to their catchy new synth-tastic release “Recover.”

CHVRCHES – Recover

Lorde is an up-and-coming New Zealand native singer-song writer with an apparent talent and knack for creating catchy pop-tracks that’ll appeal to just about anyone. She’s released a strong debut EP, The Love Club, which you can stream in completion on SoundCloud. Listen to “The Love Club” and “Royals,” two tracks I just can’t seem to get enough of:

 iamforest is moniker of Vancouver-based chillwave producer Luke Hartle. His latest beauty of a single and release, “Structures” is full of ambient bliss, yet still maintains a strongly defined beat. Find iamforest on SoundCloud, and/or listen + download his tracks on bandcamp.

Azekel is an East Londoner and alternative R&B producer who may be giving Frank Ocean a run for his money. Have a listen to Azekel’s debut single, “That Feeling,” which officially releases, February 25th.

Coma is the alias of pop-infused electro synth masters, Marius Bubat and Georg Conrad. They’ll be releasing a new album, Technicolor, due out in April via Kompakt, and “Hoooooray” is their first single from their debut LP.

The days are cold (at least in San Francisco), and the new music flow is kinda slow. But (!) despite these hurry-up-and-wait times where new music production seems to be on a fierce hold, I present to you a fresh track roundup! Let’s get on with it:

Foxygen is on just about everyone’s radar. They’ve been deemed a “band to watch in 2013” by many, and all ears are open. The singer/songwriter LA-based duo consists of Sam France and Jonathan Rado. They’re young, yet create the essence of a Velvet Underground/Bob Dylan/Kinks persona.

Foxygen‘s latest release, “No Destruction” will be found on Their forthcoming album, We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace and Magicout January 22nd via Jagjaguwar.

Best line of the song: “There’s no need to be an asshole, you’re not in Brooklyn anymore.” Enjoy:

Mike Tucker, the blonde, giant (almost 7 foot-tall) producer also known as Blood Diamonds (and one of Grimes’ many BFFs) has collaborated w/ex-A$AP member, Dominic Lord. The result? Some seriously funky hip-hop. Have a listen to “Barcode” now:

Karen Marie Ørsted aka , the Copenhagen-hailing electro-pop princess who’s made serious waves amongst the blogosphere with just a couple of tracks, has graced us with, “Glass,” yet another gem. Some are calling her the ‘Scandinavian Grimes’ though I think the two have sounds, and personalities entirely of their own, both of which are still entirely addicting. I can hardly contain my excitement for Doldrums‘ upcoming album, “Lesser Evil” (out 2/25 on Souterrain Transmissions/Europe, and 2/26 on Arbutus Records/North America). Airick Woodhead is the Canadian mastermind behind Doldrums, and he’s stead-fast to producing some of the freshest, most interesting experimental/electro music out there. “Anomaly” is Doldrums‘ latest release from his highly anticipated forthcoming album:

Brothers in Law is a new lo-fi, shoegaze, indie-pop outfit out of none other than Pesaro, Italy. According to The 405Brothers in Law have recently gone from duo to trio and will soon release their second EP, Gray Days, on 7″ vinyl, limited edition, via We Were Never Being Boring, CF-records and MattaLab. “Holy Weekend” can be found on Gray Days due out February 16th. I stumbled upon Widowspeak via Captured Tracks, and boy, I’m glad I did. The “western-tinged” indie-pop/rock n’ roll group composed of Molly Hamilton and Robert Earl Thomas transcends you into a dreamy bliss. Their second LP, “Almanac,” is due out January 22nd, (but you can stream the entire album on SoundCloud right now).

Flight Facilities is a funky electro pop production based out of Australia. Remember their 2011 jam, “Crave You” featuring Giselle? Regardless, the duo has recently released, “Clair De Lune,” a breathtakingly beautiful track featuring Christine Hoberg, with haunting video to match:

New Hype-Worthy Artist: Twigs

TwigsTwigs (update: now FKA Twigs) is a new, semi-mysterious UK-based electro-pop artist that everyone is losing their shit over (and I mean that in the most complimentary way possible). The sultry songstress has swiftly joined the ranks of , Kate Boy and Empress Of by stirring up major hype amongst the blogosphere, and it’s easy to see why. Twigs’ sullen vocals and glitchy synth make for a unique, dark electro-pop sound that leaves you aching for more. The possible model and dancer’s rapid fire fame has landed her on the cover of i-D’s “The Just Kids” issue and The Fader called Twigs a “grown up Grimes.”

Worth the Hype – Meet New Electro-Pop Songstress: MØ

MØ - PilgrimIsn’t it a wondrous phenomenon that while basking in the discovery a new, magnifying musical gem of stunning indie-electro-pop proportions, you suddenly receive an email from a homie recommending the ‘new dame,’ and your news feed instantly floods with blog posts calling your glorious ‘diamond in the rough’ the “next new Grimes.” In that moment, you realize that while, in that nano second of bliss in which you were only beginning to discover the magnitude of a new potential electro-pop star, there will always be someone one step ahead of you. This can either be A) really fucking annoying and/or depressing or B) reaffirming in that your musical tastes/choices may also have potential.

So with that, I, a homie via email, and a bunch of other blogs present to you a new electro-pop sensation hailing from Copenhagen: . The talented 23-year-old songstress, Karen Marie Ørsted, graces us with two electro-pop gems, (Pilgrim, and Maiden) full of soaring vocals and just enough synth to keep us on the edge of our seats while she records her debut album.
