New Majical Cloudz + Video – Turns Turns Turns

Majical Cloudz - Turns Turns TurnsIf you haven’t heard the phrase, “A friend of Grimes is a friend of mine,” (now you have), the concept, however, shouldn’t be foreign to you. It’s only natural that an influential band or producer you love, most likely has musically inclined friends that you will also love. In the case for Grimes, the indie-electro “It Girl” not only has amazingly talented pals, but she outwardly expresses her love or support for said friends and their music, (Myths, Elite Gymnastics, and d’Eon to name a few). This in a sense, puts Grimes’ talented friends on the map (even more so). It may not be fair to say this is all of Grimes’s doing, as these are bands we (may) know, who have made names for themselves, but when Grimes brings her pals on tour, collaboratively creates music with them, or simply chatters away with them via Twitter, she puts these bands on people’s radars. Experimental-electro Montreal producer, Devon Welsh, aka Majical Cloudz falls into this category.

Majical Cloudz’ latest single, “Turns Turns Turns,” is a dreamy, emotionally-driven beauty of a track based on a 2-note loop. The trippy video (as seen below) premiered on Gorilla vs. Bear today. The track will be found on Majical Cloudz’ forthcoming EP, Turns Turns Turns, out December 3rd via Arbutus (US) and Merok (UK). (Yalls also remixed Turns Turns Turns found here.)

Watch Chilling NEW Music Video: Majical Cloudz – Childhood’s End

Majical Cloudz Childhood's EndMajical Cloudz, the alias behind Montreal-hailing Devon Welsh, recently released a powerful, somber, yet beautiful electro-based ballad, “Childhood’s End.” The track, Welsh’s strongest one yet, can be found on his upcoming spring release, Impersonator, and follows his impressive 2012, Turns Turns Turns EP, proving that Welsh is indeed a lyrical whiz.

According to Pitchfork, “Welsh says, with this new material, his goal is ‘to communicate a lot with as little as possible.'”

Today, we’re treated with the release of a chilling b&w music video for the “Childhood’s End” directed by Emily Kai Bock (Grimes’s, “Oblivion,” Doldrums’s “She is the Wave” and Grizzly Bear’s, “Yet Again”). Enjoy:

Listen to + Watch Blowin’ up Sweetsy-Soulful Electro-Pop Duo: Sylvan Esso

Sylvan EssoSylvan Esso, the new North Carolina-based duo made up of Mountain Man’s Amelia Meath and Megafaun’s Nick Sanborn has been one of my (and many others’) biggest obsessions of 2013/14. Their sweetsy-soulful electro-pop is ridiculously catchy, and it appears that everyone’s catching on.

Sylvan Esso‘s tracks have been hitting top spots on Spotify’s viral streaming charts, are some of the most requested on Sirius XMU radio, continuously top Hype Machine charts and after SXSW, the duo received reviews from the New York Times, People Magazine, Spin, NPR, Brooklyn Vegan, etc. They’re blowin’ up, y’all!

Story has it that Amelia and Nick met in 2012 in passing at a show they both happened to be playing w/their respective bands and/or projects. Amelia asked Nick to rework her first song, “Play it Right,” and turns out, he did just that. The two then realized they could make sweet, sweet music together and Sylvan Esso was born. On May 13th, Partisan Records will release Sylvan Esso‘s highly anticipated debut, self-titled album.

The two have just three tracks, “Coffee,” “Play it Right” and “Hey Mami” that people like myself have played an ungodly amount of times. And, if you ever tune in to Cuckoo for Coco’s Pop Underground, (yes, I’m plugging the radio show right now – It’s every Sunday at 11 am – noon PT on BFF.fm), you’ve most likely heard all three. Just this week, in anticipation of the debut album, Sylvan Esso has dropped two new videos for “Coffee” and “Play it Right,” that both “get up, get down.”  After the album release, the duo will also embark on a tour with Tune-Yards May – June. What an eclectic and stellar combination! Enjoy:

Sounds of Sorrow: A World-Wide Roundup of Sad Breakup Songs

High-Fidelity-John-Cusack-miseryAside from maybe death, there’s nothing as painful, soul crushing and gut wrenching as a breakup. A breakup certainly emulates the feeling of death when the black pit of despair you’ve suddenly been thrust into wraps its cold, unforgiving fingers around your heart and mangles it until you’re gasping for air, feeling empty, desperate, delirious and broken.

The only logical way to “cope” with the pain, of course, is to (no… not jump on OKCupid), but drown your sorrow in the sounds of ridiculously sad songs, and there are plenty of ’em. And since “everybody hurts,” I asked people of various ages from across the globe (San Francisco to New York, Australia to Germany) to spill their number one sob-song. If you’re going through a breakup (big hug), know someone who is (‘cus we sadly all do), or you just wanna be a sad sap, turn up these depressing tracks and force yourself to ‘get on with it.’

It’s no wonder we’re all such a mess, is it? We’re like Tom Hanks in Big. Little boys and girls trapped in adult bodies and forced to get on with it.  ― Nick Hornby, High Fidelity

*Note: Some of these songs were just like a stubborn ex-lover; too damn difficult to work with. So I’ve compiled most into a Spotify player and the few tracks that just didn’t want to work things out are linked.

Watch Sexy New Music Video: Autre Ne Veut – Play By Play

Autre Ne Veut – Play by PlayLast week, Arthur Ashin aka Autre Ne Veut, the 80s/90s R&B electro ‘bedroom’ artist and Brooklynite, released his highly anticipated album, Anxiety.

This week, we’re graced with the premiere of Autre Ne Veut’s sexy new music video for “Play by Play,” the opening track on Anxiety. The video, produced by Urban Outfitters and directed by Geremy Jasper and Georgie Greville of LEGS, features an emotionally charged Ashin belting lyrics like, “You make me crawl/and make me harder” amongst a meta of karaoke videos. It’s trippy, lustful, moving and totally intense – Enough to make you wanna watch it on repeat 10x, then take a cold shower.

Watch the brand spankin’ new music video for “Play by Play” below and while you’re at it, stream Anxiety on Spotify. Also, make sure to catch Autre Ne Veut while he’s on tour now with Majical Cloudz.
