Badass Round Up – New: Brick + Mortar, Yeasayer, How to Dress Well

So many new and badass eargasm jams to speak of today, they’re all being wrapped up into one sweet package of listening pleasure:

1)  Brick + Mortar – Bangs: This catchy rock jam from the Jersey hailing duo can be found on their limited edition 2 song 7″ being released in June. You can also download for free on on their Tumblr. (The intro of this song should be blasted into your earbuds for maximum badass intensity.)

Brick + Mortar – Bangs

2) Yeasayer – Henrietta: This is the first release from Yeasayer’s recently announced, August arriving album, Fragrant World. The self-proclaimed “Middle Eastern-psych-snap-gospel” Brooklyn-based band does it again. Magnetic!

Yeasayer – Henrietta:

3) How to Dress Well – Ocean Floor For Everything: New dreamy single by ethereal/R&B artist Tom Krell that’ll be released on his new LP, Total Loss this fall.

Kindness – “The Beat is Bad!”

Kindness… sounds… nice, right? Oh (!) but it’s so much more than that. Imagine a tall skinny white guy with luscious, Fabio look-alike locks who produces so much engrossing funk that you wanna get up (‘cus you feel like being a sex machine?) and slap the “kindness” right out of this mastermind’s name. His beats are so sweet they’re baaaad.

Adam Bainbridge, the Brit behind the funky beats recently released his debut LP “World, You Need a Change of Mind” and it’s got me wanting more. That’s not very kind… or maybe it’s the kindest thing of all.

Indulge away:

Kindness – That’s Alright

Kindness – House

Kindness – Cyan

Death Grips – The Money Store: “Gaga Can’t Handle This Shit”

Wow. The intertwining of rough and ready rap/hip hop vocals, dark edgy beats and random sounds in Death Grips’ songs create this insanely intense desire for even more of their experimental chaos.

The trio (Zach Hill, Stefan Burnett, and Andy Morin) hail from Sacramento (woah, they even have a wikipedia page) and released their first album, The Money Store, April 24th with Epic Records. (Psst… the whole damn thing is available on Spotify).

While absorbing the magnitude of Death Grips’ sweet beats in my cubicle via Spotify, my coworkers were also eyeing the titles of The Money Store’s songs flood their Facebook feeds: “Fuck That,” “Bitch Please,” “Hustle Bones” – I undoubtedly scarred and/or scared them, but Oh GOD (!) is it worth it.

Give this entire album a thorough listen, or at least join in my addiction for songs like “Hacker” and “I’ve Seen Footage.”

Also, if you can resist the urge to roll your eyes and tell me to f**k off for referring you to Pitchfork, they have an interesting interview with the “riotous, shit-starting Death Grips.”

Death Grips – Hacker

Death Grips – I’ve Seen Footage

“GAWD this is Good!” Doldrums – Jump Up

…and I say in my best Chris Farley Gap Girl impression “GAWD, this is GOOD!”

I discovered this song today, and while listening to it during my dismal 9-5 morning commute, I was awoken with an outer body experience in which I could actually envision myself creating music, and in doing so, the sounds equated to something as fresh as this. Wait, and the download is FREE on Soundcloud. Trippy beats, retro throwbacks, and throaty, lyrical screams have me quivering at the knees:

Doldrums – Jump Up

(Oh!) also, here’s the Chris Farley clip, ‘cus it’s so damn good:

Phèdre’s My Creepy Aphrodite

Two things to address here:

1) Why the f*** is WordPress so ridiculous to figure out? I mean, I blog for part of my living (obviously not on WordPress, Ha Ha, BLAH), and this, right here, is making me doubt my self-worth.

2) I’ve also realized today, that in my writing career, I’ve siloed myself into two distinct styles: 1) Cynical and/or depressing or 2) Cheesy as f***.

So I bring you the best of both worlds: An easy video to post on WordPress and Phèdre’s newest bizarro homemade (this is an assumption; a good one right?) music video for Aphrodite (a combo of depressing/creepy and cheesy ie. synchronized dancing). It reeks with cosmic electro-popness, sounds my childhood keyboard used to make (the dog barks were always so fun), balloons filled w/hair and someone’s fortune-telling grandma. It’ll sooth your experimental desiring soul of sounds and creepy curiosities :

p.s. Have you seen their gluttonous NSFW honey soaked weirdness of a video for In Decay? Oh man, you’ve gotta see it:

Mozart’s Sister Saves the Day

A homie of mine introduced me to Mozart’s Sister back in November of 2011, and I haven’t been able to kick her (figuratively speaking) since… and I mean this as the highest form of flattery. As an avid and almost rabid new music scourer, moving on the next best thing within a week is par for the course, but Mozart’s Sister isn’t going anywhere and (i’m hoping) this “static electro-pop” songstress is gonna be big.

Hailing from Montréal (Oh Canada, you’re just too good!), Caila Thompson-Hannant, formerly of Shapes and Sizes, has only produced a handful of sickeningly addictive pop songs, but they’re electro-tastic enough to make an impact. Chained Together is her newest gem of glorious pop proportions from her 3-track DEAR FEAR EP.

Mozart’s Sister – Don’t Leave it to Me – This is my all-time favorite Mozart’s Sister jam. I can’t tell you how many times i’ve listened to it on repeat:

Mozart’s Sister – Single Status

Sociopathic Jams & Gems

It’s Mother’s Day and to end it with an ironic bang, I bring you these child psychopath jams and gems that go hand in hand:

1) This fresh jam about nihilism and sociopaths is paving its way to the top of the popular charts on Hype Machine as we speak. The track and entire Slow Rainbow tape is available for free at bandcamp.

LIL KIDS – Nobodies

2) This eerie NY Times article about child socio/psychopaths was just published this weekend:

Can You Call a 9 Year Old a Psychopath?

“Anne is a strict disciplinarian, she said, particularly with Michael, who she worries would otherwise simply run wild. She mentioned an episode of “Criminal Minds” that terrified her, in which a couple’s younger son was murdered by his older brother. “In the show, the older brother didn’t show any remorse. He just said, ‘He deserved it, because he broke my plane.’ When I saw that, I said, ‘Oh my God, I so don’t need that episode to be my life story down the line.’ ” She laughed awkwardly, then shook her head. “I’ve always said that Michael will grow up to be either a Nobel Prize winner or a serial killer.”

Happy Mother’s Day!
